Young Sherlock is an energetic mystery-adventure series that explores the early life of one of fiction’s most famous detectives before he becomes the legendary Sherlock Holmes of Baker Street. Released on Prime Video in March 2026, the series stars Hero Fiennes Tiffin as Sherlock Holmes, alongside Dónal Finn, Zine Tseng, Joseph Fiennes, Natascha McElhone, Max Irons and Colin Firth. With Guy Ritchie among its creators and directors, the series combines detective work with action, humour and adventure to create a younger and more rebellious version of Sherlock.
Set primarily in 1870s Oxford, the story follows a young Sherlock who is intelligent but reckless and far from the disciplined detective audiences know. After finding himself caught up in a murder investigation that threatens his freedom and future, Sherlock is forced to use his emerging powers of observation and deduction to uncover the truth. What begins as his first major case gradually develops into a much larger international conspiracy, sending him on an adventure that will ultimately influence the person he becomes.
Hero Fiennes Tiffin gives Sherlock a youthful energy that separates his interpretation from previous versions of the character. His Sherlock is clever and observant but also impulsive, rebellious and inexperienced. Rather than presenting audiences with an already brilliant and polished detective, the series allows viewers to watch his abilities develop as he encounters increasingly complicated situations. This gives Tiffin plenty of opportunities to balance Sherlock’s intelligence with vulnerability and humour.
Another particularly interesting element is Dónal Finn’s James Moriarty. Instead of immediately presenting Moriarty as Sherlock’s greatest enemy, the series explores the characters at an earlier stage in their lives. Their dynamic adds unpredictability to the story and provides an intriguing foundation for the relationship audiences know will eventually become legendary.
Visually, the series has many of the characteristics associated with Guy Ritchie’s filmmaking. Fast editing, energetic action and stylish camerawork prevent the Victorian setting from feeling old-fashioned. The show is less interested in creating a traditional Sherlock Holmes adaptation than in delivering an action-packed origin story. This approach will appeal to viewers looking for entertainment, although those expecting complicated deduction and slow-burning mysteries may find the emphasis on action less satisfying.
The performances and relationships help carry the story even when the central conspiracy becomes complicated. Hero Fiennes Tiffin proves capable of leading the series and gives viewers a Sherlock who still has plenty to learn. Watching those early experiences gradually shape his personality is ultimately one of the show’s most appealing qualities.
Young Sherlock is an entertaining reimagining of Sherlock Holmes’ early years. Hero Fiennes Tiffin brings charisma, humour and youthful recklessness to the famous detective, while the combination of murder mystery, conspiracy and fast-paced action gives the series its own identity.
